约翰·加菲尔德(John Garfield,1913-3-4) 生于纽约市东部一个贫苦的犹太移民家庭，原名雅各布·朱利叶斯·加芬克(JacobJuliusGarfinkle)。在他七岁的时候母亲就去世了，父亲一手把他拉扯大，不过生性好动的他还是得在感化院里度过他的少年时光，在这里他开始对拳击和戏剧产生了兴趣。之后他参加了一个全州的中学生辩论比赛中并最后获胜，胜利带给他一笔奖学金，而他就用这笔钱进入了玛丽亚·乌斯本斯卡亚（Maria Ouspenskaya）戏剧学校学习。
